It’s okay to take a break.

So, this week, albeit a short week post bank holiday weekend, ended up in a sick day on Wednesday, as I was feeling rather under the weather, and while I know that really, it’s completely okay to say ‘hey, wait a minute, I’m not very well, I can’t be my best self today so I’m having a rest day’, that didn’t stop the awful feeling in the pit of my stomach, you got it, failure.

I don’t know when, but at some point it began to feel like if you’re not going at 100 miles per hour and being an absolute boss and achieving day in, day out, you’re not doing life properly. I know deep down that no one thinks any less of me for having a sick day, but that doesn’t stop me from feeling like I’ve failed, let people down, that I couldn’t just power on through and get on with it – which seems to be a super ‘inspirational’ mantra that pops up on my insta feed numerous times per week.

In reality, I know the only person who is thinking this, is me. I’m beating myself up because I’m not feeling 100% and being ace at life all. the. time. How ridiculous is that, am I right?

Somehow, it became okay to prioritise my to-do list at work, over my actual physical and mental health. And that, is absolutely not okay. What is okay, is taking a break when your body is telling you that actually you’re not feeling your best. That means that most likely, you cannot do your best either, so it makes absolute sense that you take time off.

Next time you feel like you don’t deserve a rest, time off, a sick day because you’re not feeling like yourself, just remember, the world will not implode if you have a rest day. Your to-do list will probably still be there when you get back. It’s really not the end of the world, and it does not mean that you have failed.

Take a break when you need it, you’re only human after all.
